In collaboration with developer and excellent boyfriend Sam Jarman, I designed and released a tool (in beta) for use alongside Twitch’s existing moderation tools, which allows you to import a large list of ban words from a spreadsheet or similar.
As someone who manages large and often unruly communities as part of my work for a large esports broadcaster, I have always found the process for loading in banned words slow, espeically for large lists. It makes for cumbersome work, especially when trying to initially set up a channel or maintain multiple brand channels.
This tool is predominantly built for those who have a lot of banned words they would like to implement on a Twitch account, and/or those who maintain these lists across multiple Twitch accounts. I personally believe comprehensive and sophisticated banned word lists are incredibly important in creating a safe and inclusive environment in Twitch chat. Perhaps I will write another blog post on this another day ;)
To use the tool:
1. Navigate to your banned-words page in the twitch dashboard (https://www.twitch.tv/YOURUSERNAME/dashboard/settings/moderation/blocked-terms)
2. Click on the purple ban hammer icon in the top right of Chrome. (Don't change tabs)
3. Type or paste your terms, separated by a comma. A good list I wrote and currently maintain on our brand pages can be found here.
4. Click ‘ban’.
5. Do not touch the mouse or keyboard while the script is still running, this will interrupt the process.
If you wish to stop at some point, simply close the tab.
This will not override your existing banned words. Words can be deleted the normal way via the trash can icon. Yes, the list I run is comprehensive, on a professional esports Twitch page there are a lot of topics I deem unnecessary for discussion, as such I try and keep the conversation directly related to the content at hand. YMMV – delete as you wish :)
This is an experimental tool that is no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Twitch Interactive and may stop working at any time. Sam and I will try to keep this up to date as time allows.
